Darling Buds Of May – Viva Brother

On the cover of their debut album, the members of Viva Brother stare out from photographs hung in a barbershop window. A cynical voice might suggest that’s fitting, given that photographs hung in barbershop windows are usually about 20 years out of date. Viva Brother, after all, proudly cleave to the 1990s for inspiration. The occasionally angular guitar riffs and falsetto vocals are borrowed from Blur, while the attitude and vocal mannerisms come via Oasis. Taken from Alexis Petridis, article from the Guardian.

Vienna – Ultravox

From the 1980 Album – Vienna

It only missed the Number one slot by John Lennon’s “Woman” but still won single of the year at the Brits in 1981. A truly classic song; a synth-pop ballad, using a grand piano as the main instrument and a viola solo in the middle of the song. The 2^nd video is more traditional late 80’s synth pop rock tune.

British reggae band formed in 1978 in Birmingham and named after a British unemployment benefit form. They had a host of hits, but their debut still holds that heavier reggae hint before sliding more into pop. The 2^nd video is “Food For Thought”.
